Traditional ‘Sil Batta’ (Flat Grind Stone) is an age-old home appliance used to prepare spice mixes for Indian Cuisine by crushing garlic, onion, chillies or any other ingredients between the flat stone (Sil) and the grinding stone (Batta). A sil batta is usually made out of stone or granite. Can still be found in traditional old homes. However the ‘sil-batta katne wala’ is increasingly difficult to find (as depicted in the picture).

One of the reason, why the chutneys and spice pastes tasted better (than mixies) is that use of Sil batta does not generate heat on the spice (unlike Mixie) and the pulverization of the ingredients because of the friction (other than the cutting and chopping of Mixie – no friction) .

Hope Sil Batta does not disappear in to oblivion, like other copper utensils which where were in use in the not so distant past.

Very interesting cooking utensils, pressure cooker and pickle jars.
